Playing for Success

Playing for Success is an ongoing after school scheme run in partnership with Lambeth and the Department for Education and Skills.

It is based in our dedicated community classroom, the Ben Hollioake Learning Centre, and delivers an innnovative ten-week curriculum of ICT literacy and numeracy inspired by a combination of cricket, other sports and pupils’ own interests.

It is aimed at pupils who lack motivation or inspiration at school – something that the setting of The Brit Oval can provide.
Pupils arrive at 3:30pm, and leave at around 6pm having received an hour of academic lessons, and an hour of cricket coaching from our professional staff. Over the ten weeks pupils will also go on a tour of the ground, and will have the opportunity to see a game of cricket at the Brit Oval. They also have their awards ceremony in the Ashes Suite which is attended by Surrey players and the childrens’ parents.

The PfS scheme at the Brit Oval is sponsored by social housing company Connaught. Their £25,000 per year is fed directly back into the scheme, and allows the children to receive their coaching (something that is not normally done in PfS schemes), and enables each pupil to become a junior memberof Surrey County Cricket Club.

The course is run every weekday from Monday to Thursday for 30 weeks of the year, with 24 schools and around 380 pupils attending.
We are currently halfway through the last term of the academic year with six schools from the Lambeth area attending the course.
