Walters plays captain’s knock

Stewart Walters had another great day at the office playing for his local Perth team, Midland Guildford at the weekend.
Walters, who was made captain of the side from last week, managed his troops well and after the first day’s play, Midland Guildford were in the box seat after restricting Rockingham Mandurah to 171, and in reply were sailing at 60 for no loss.
And this week, Walters, who batted at four, ensured that there were not going to be any slip ups and played a captain’s knock by scoring his second consecutive hundred of the season,
Stewart Walters again impressed with the bat, scoring yet another century at the weekend as he guided his side to the 172 victory total and beyond.
At the close, Midland Guildford had reached 403, with Walters making 125 in just 176 minutes at the crease. His innings included 20 boundaries and the win was an important one, ending a six game losing streak, which might have now turned things around.
The last few weeks for Walters have been particularly prosperous. In his last three outings with the bat, the 21 year old right-hander has scored 281 runs and reports from the Midland Guildford Club suggest that he has become a much more complete player since spending some time playing County Cricket in England for Surrey.
Walters is very much a part of Surrey’s plans going forward as was indicated when he was injected into the one-day frame half way through last season. He impressed both Steve Rixon and Alan Butcher with his all-round professional approach to things and in his six matches at the top level, Walters scored 134 runs at the respectable average of 33.50. He was also a more than useful commodity in the field, taking four catches which included one screamer, to dismiss Darren Maddy at square leg in Surrey’s totesport match against Leicestershire last August at the Brit Oval.
