Walters on top of the World down under

Stewart Walters in now over a month and a half into his debut season at Perth Cricket Club in the Western Australian Premier League and the captain and coach is more than happy with the way the season has started.

Here on www.surreycricket.com the Surrey man has written the next instalment of his blog on how life is going down under.

Well from a cricketing point of view, I could not be happier with my side. We have continued in our winning ways and to be unbeaten at this stage is fantastic and a great platform from which we can launch our assault on the league for the remainder of the season. We finished 12th last year so to be top of the league in the build up to the Christmas break is quality.

On the field the side is playing a very positive brand of cricket, which is something that we have really been working on and talking about during our twice weekly training sessions. When I say a positive brand of cricket, I mean that whatever stage of the game, we try and be as positive as possible. A prime example of this came last weekend in the field against Rockingham-Mandurah. I was really proud of the lads because even after a long day in the dirt, we never let them off the hook and kept them down to under 230 from nearly 100 overs.

From a personal point of view, the last couple of weeks, since my last blog, have been hectic but satisfying. I feel a real sense of responsibility as the coach and captain and at times do feel the pressure. The matches are only going to get harder as we go on in the competition as we are fast becoming the team everyone wants to beat. I read a piece on www.surreycricket.com a couple of weeks ago, where Ramps was talking about Strictly Come Dancing. He said that the dancers who consistently come top of the league each week feel more pressure when they train. This is something that I can see, but we as a team are thriving.

The best moment of the season so far, came against my old team Midland Guildford. We batted first and out of a total of 247 from our 50 overs, I scored 81. I have to say that going into the game, I was very nervous and apprehensive, but I managed to calm myself down to start playing my way. I knew that all the time that I was batting, it was killing Midland and that spurred me on to keep going. I was eventually out in the penultimate over trying to score some quick runs. Back in the dressing room, we felt that 220 would have been a good score, so to get 27 more meant that we went out to field with confidence.

After a decent start, we managed to stem their scoring rate and eventually completely dry it up. This was another example of our positive cricket where we kept the field up and made Midland try and hit boundaries. Benno came into the attack and to demonstrate our strength in depth, picked up two for 28 off his ten overs. Hopefully, this will be the start of something great from Benno. We ended up winning by about 80 runs, which was a great feeling.

Aside from the cricket, I am still doing my three days a week at Slater Gartrell Sports, which keeps me busy. It is always quite varied and it is good to meet new people all the time.

My wife, Jacki, is still enjoying the pregnancy and it is not long now until I am going to be a father, just under 14 weeks. It is great to come home at night and see her glowing and we can feel the baby kicking now, which is so special. I have a feeling that it could be quite a hyperactive baby.

To say that I am enjoying life this summer is an understatement. The weather is getting warmer, my cricket is going well and everything at home is positive. I suppose all that is left to say is: until next time, and I hope to have few 100's to write about and maybe the odd wicket or two!!!
