Surrey take victory by nine wickets
Published 9 September 2007
A blistering innings of 87 from Scott Newman and a classical 68 not out from Jonathan Batty saw Surrey to victory over Warwickshire on day four of the LV County Championship at Edgbaston.
Starting the day two without loss, Newman showed his intent by smashing the first ball of the day through extra cover off Neil Carter. This was the first of 12 fours and two sixes that the left hander struck as he and Batty ensured that there were no mistakes in chasing down the victory target.
Batty was typically solid and clinical, putting away anything loose from the tired looking Warwickshire seam attack. In between boundaries, Surrey’s opening pair ran well between the wickets, frustrating the home team as they struggled to stem the flow of runs.
On a day four wicket, Ant Botha seemed to be Warwickshire’s only hope of getting a breakthrough, however the belligerent Newman treated the left arm spinner with disdain, sweeping him for six to bring up his half century.
Shortly after, Batty went to the same milestone, doing so with a beautifully struck on drive for four – the eleventh of his innings. The pair took Surrey into the break requiring just 48 runs for victory with the score 131 without loss.
Newman kicked on after the break but was sadly out, caught behind, only thirteen short of what would have been a magnificent century. This brought Mark Ramprakash to the crease, who with Batty ensured that Surrey went past the required total. The centurion from the first innings hit the winning runs with a straight drive four giving his side victory by nine wickets.
