The weather finally improved for the Second XI this week and they were treated to some sunshine at Cheam for a scheduled four day match against Warwickshire. Things went bad from the start, however, as Stewart Walters, who has made an amazing recovery from his recent injury, lost the toss and Surrey found themselves in the field.

An early wicket for Stuart Meaker lulled Surrey into a position of false security as the second wicket partnership of Richard Johnson and skipper Luke Parker then proceeded to put on 104 before Johnson was trapped lbw by Murtaza Hussain and at lunch Warwickshire were well placed on 122-2. The Surrey bowlers kept making inroads into the batting line-up but the innings was dominated by Luke Parker who added 131 with Tony Frost (42) for the fourth wicket stand. At close of play on the first day Warwickshire stood at 310-5 with Parker on 173. What had threatened to become a very large score was hauled back on the second morning as the Surrey bowlers slowed the scoring. In 20 overs they mopped up the last five wickets, including the limpet-like Parker who was last out with the score on 341. Parker’s mammoth innings of 195 had lasted 430 minutes. He faced 367 balls and hit 26 fours. For Surrey Stuart Meaker returned figures of 4-55, Murtaza Hussain took 2-52 from 34 niggardly overs and Neil Saker 2-70.

Surrey batted for eight overs before lunch when Chris Murtagh and Danny Newton took the side safely to 17-0. During the afternoon Warwickshire operated with a battery of six seam bowlers, each bowling for short effective spells. Their consistent pressure forced the batsmen to make errors and there was some poor shot selection although Chris Murtagh was out to an exceptionally good ball from Stuart Hole. The tea score was 94-6. Jak Martin steadied the ship with a hard fought 31 from 81 balls but Surrey were all out for 122 (grateful for 26 no balls to boost the total) and had been asked to follow on before the close. The pick of the Warwickshire bowlers were Hole (4-36) and Chris Woakes who took 3-14. Their slip fielders were particularly effective.

Openers Chris Murtagh and Danny Newton started the second innings with careful application and put on 34-0 before stumps on the second day. Continuing on the third morning they took the score to 53 before Newton fell, caught behind. Laurie Evans (27) and Gary Wilson (24) both made promising starts but the Warwickshire bowlers kept the pressure on and wickets fell regularly throughout the day. Stuart Meaker lifted the gloom a little with a spirited knock of 39 not out from 35 balls, but the writing was on the wall for Surrey and they succumbed to be all out for 213, losing by an innings and six runs with a day to spare. Warwickshire took 20 points to Surrey’s three.
