Surrey County Cricket Club have retained the services of their powerful ball striker, Ali Brown, with a one year contract which will keep him at the Brit Oval until the end of the 2008 season.

Brown, nicknamed “The Lord”, joined Surrey in 1990 and has been an ever-present figure in both One Day and four-day cricket for the Club since he made his first class debut in 1992. In 16 Championship seasons with Surrey, the right-handed batsman has on eight occasions scored over 1000 runs and currently averages 43.50.

Brown’s destructive nature with the bat in the One Day arena is well documented and is exemplified by his world record innings of 268 against Glamorgan in the 2002 C&G Trophy. In 1996, Brown, made the first of his 16 One Day International appearances, and in the third match of the Texaco Trophy series against India the same year, the Surrey man scored a magnificent 118.

Showing no signs of letting up in domestic One Day cricket, Brown, joined forces with Surrey’s other master-blaster, James Benning, against Gloucestershire in the 2007 Friends Provident Trophy. The pair put together a Surrey record opening stand of 294, laying the foundations for a World Record One Day team total of 496 for four in their 50 overs.

Surrey Cricket Manager, Alan Butcher, said: “Ali has been very keen to express his determination to regain his place in our middle order. This will make for stiff competition and keep all contenders on their toes.”

Ali Brown’s record breaking innings against Glamorgan gained him the honour of having the Long Room Bar in the Brit Oval Pavilion named after the feat. This was officially named in 2005.

Brown has scored 14,705 first class runs and 10,693 runs in domestic One Day cricket t an average of 31.72.
