Surrey record their third win on the bounce

Surrey celebrate

A brilliant all-round display from the Brown Caps meant that Surrey ran out easy 53 run winners against Glamorgan at the Brit Oval today.

The Brown Caps, in front of a crowd of close to 4000, saw them post a formidable 280 from their forty overs, with Scott Newman, Ali Brown and Chris Schofield all making half centuries. Glamorgan could only muster 227 in reply thanks to an excellent bowling and fielding effort by the home side.

On a beautiful bank holiday Monday, stand in captain, Mark Ramprakash had no hesitation in batting after he won the toss and his openers, James Benning and Scott Newman got off to exactly the start he had wanted.

The pair had fifty on the board in no time and Newman helped himself to a half century of his own from just 49 balls that included eleven boundaries with some blistering strokes once again. Benning was his usually brutal self but he came undone trying to hit Dean Cosker over the short leg side boundary but only succeeded in skying an easy catch to mid on and was out for 35.

Newman followed soon after for an eye catching 58 and even though Richard Clinton (two) and Ramprakash (27) went relatively cheaply, Ali Brown and Chris Schofield were able to keep up the momentum. At 154 for four, and with the reliable Ramprakash gone, Glamorgan could have got themselves back into the match but Brown and Schofield ensured that the Brown Caps were going to post a daunting total. Together they added 70 for the fifth wicket in just 43 balls, propelling Surrey to 280 for eight. Brown reaching his 50 off just 45 balls and Schofield made his off a mere 34.

The Glamorgan run chase was always going to be a tough one when their Australian overseas player, Jimmy Maher was caught brilliantly by youngster Chris Jordan who took a spectacular catch at a wide off position.

David Hemp kept things ticking over for the visitors as he made a well-compiled 59 but his wicket was among four that fell very quickly, to scupper the visitors’ chances.

At 164 for three, Glamorgan then lost their next four wickets for just six runs in the space of 13 balls, which included the vital wicket of Hemp. From that point on, victory was inevitable for the home side who eventually bowled the opposition out for 227 off the last ball of the match.

Mohammad Akram was once again impressive as he took 2-36 from eight overs today. These figures went nicely with his three wickets against Yorkshire yesterday, which lead to a five-wicket win at Scarborough. Matt Nicholson, Harbhajan Singh and Chris Schofield also took two wickets.

The win here means that Surrey have won their last three matches in this competition and are currently in joint third position. Their next match in the NatWest Pro40 is not until 4 September when they play the Kent Spitfires at Canterbury.

Surrey will now focus back on the longer version of the game this week when they begin a LV County Championship match against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl this Thursday.

Highlights of this match as well as today’s game can be seen on Surrey TV.
