Surrey prepare for Twenty20

Rikki Clarke

After a tough start to the season, Surrey are now preparing to kick start their season with a strong Twenty20 campaign, a competition in which they have traditionally been very successful.

Since winning the inaugural Twenty20 Cup in 2003, Surrey have never failed to make the finals of the tournament. The side will be hoping that this year will be no different as they look to continue their awesome track record and regain the title they engraved their name on four years ago.

Surrey players to watch

Tall, lithe and athletic Surrey will be looking to Rikki Clarke for the inspiration that will take them through the tough group stages. His phenomenal shot selection was demonstrated in the quarter final at the County Ground in Bristol last year as he and Mark Ramprakash set about posting Surrey’s highest ever tournament score. This is of course is backed up by his natural flare in the field and his ability to bowl at in excess of 85 miles per hour.

James Benning is the firecracker in the Surrey line up. Both he an Ali Brown will be expected to get the Brown Caps off to the sort of start that saw the side break the world record One Day score at the start of this season. His explosive stroke play at the top of the order is incredible to watch and gives Surrey a huge psychological edge over their opponents.

Nayan Doshi is simply one of the best exponents of spin in Twenty20 cricket. The leading wicket taker in Twenty20 all over the world, the left arm spinner is magnificent at both taking wickets in the middle of the inningsand pinning the opposition batting down.

Opposition to keep an eye on

Lead by Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne, the Hampshire Hawks will fancy their chances of going where the county has never been before and that is reaching the finals at Edgbaston. With a young side, their top order can appear a bit fragile but this is more than made up for with their strong bowling.

Essex are another team to watch carefully. They have a young side, which will be lead by the experience of Ronnie Irani and with murmurs of a star signing in Adam Hollioake the Eagles must surely be a favorite to go through the group stages.
