Surrey eclipse one-day record total
Published 29 April 2007
The Surrey Brown Caps posted the highest ever total in the history of limited overs cricket today after racking up an incredible 496-4 from their 50 overs in their Friends Provident match with Gloucestershire at the Brit Oval.
The previous best was set by world cup finalists, Sri Lanka, who scored 443-9 in a match against the Netherlands in July last year.
In domestic cricket, Surrey’s 438-5 against Glamorgan in 2002 was the old mark but this was smashed today as the Surrey batsmen ran riot.
Ali Brown (176) and James Benning (152) both made big hundreds in a record opening stand for Surrey of 294. Rikki Clarke was also at his brutal best, blazing his way
Ali Brown in full flight to an unbeaten 82, which came from just 28 deliveries, and his half-century coming from 19 balls.
Surrey’s innings included an unbelievable 320 runs which came in boundaries and this was made up of 47 fours and 22 sixes.
Surrey Cricket Manager, Alan Butcher commenting on the remarkable achievement said, “It was a pleasure to watch. You won’t see too many matches like this in one-day cricket where a team racks up this many runs. Conditions were very good for batting but it was still an incredibly faultless display by the likes of Ali Brown, James Benning and Rikki Clarke in particular. These kind of performances will really hold us in good stead for the rest of the competition.”
He also added, “The last two days of cricket, where we have scored over 900 runs, must have been extremely entertaining for our supporters to watch. I was really pleased at our courageous effort on the final day of our Championship match with Hampshire, getting so close to what was a huge fourth innings victory target, and now today’s display really shows how destructive our line up can be.”
