Continuing its commitment to cricket development, Surrey County Cricket Club have announced the new intake for the 2007 Pemberton Greenish Academy.

The Pemberton Greenish Surrey Cricket Academy, which is based at the Surrey Cricket Centre in Burpham, aims to make the transition from youth cricket to professional first-class cricket as smooth as possible.

For the first time since its inception in 2002, the intake has included girls, which is a reflection of the increasing popularity of women’s cricket in Surrey, as well as the Club’s support of the women’s game.

Reporting in early November for their first session, the Academy members will meet twice a week throughout the winter under the supervision of the Academy Director, Gareth Townsend, other Surrey affiliated coaches and professional players. Regular skills and fitness training sessions will be interspersed with lifestyle and psychological lectures, to provide an all round education for the Pemberton Greenish Academy members.

The Pemberton Greenish Academy has gone from strength to strength with nine of the 18 graduates from the programme so far going on to become members of a professional cricket staff. The 2006 Pemberton Greenish Academy intake was an extremely successful one, with four graduates, Simon King, Arun Harinath, Laurie Evans and Mathew Spriegel, all earning contracts with the senior Surrey squad for next season.

Commenting on the success of the Pemberton Greenish Academy, Gareth Townsend, the Academy Director, said: “We have achieved a lot in the last four years and our academy graduates are reaping great rewards for the huge amount of time and effort they put into the programme.”

He added: “I believe that the structure of the Pemberton Greenish Academy really compliments our coaching programme throughout the youth and senior set up and as such helps the players to prepare for the quality of cricket they will encounter going forward.”
