Mark Ramprakash

Mark Ramprakash and Scott Newman hit a century each to save the game for Surrey and leave Headingley Carnegie with a draw. Ramprakash reached a historic milestone as he became the 25th player in history to score 100 first class hundreds.

At the ground on which Mark Ramprakash scored his maiden first class hundred, he returned 19 years later to notch up his 100th century. The Surrey captain cut David Wainwright for four just after tea on the final day to go to three figures. He spoke to Surrey TV after the special occasion as said he was really pleased to reach the milestone.

Surrey had to bat all day and that is exactly they did, after Darren Gough declared overnight with a 210 run lead for Yorkshire. Surrey lost Stewart Walters early in the second over, but Scott Newman and Mark Ramprakash shared a stand that made the game safe. Ramprakash was watchful and took his time as Newman played in his typical fashion. Throughout Newman’s innings he continued to play his attacking strokes and did not settle for batting out the time patiently. The pitch had become easier to bat on and was offering little for the seam bowlers. Yorkshire’s attack did not find the swing that led to the first innings wickets.

Newman had played fluently and scored more freely than Ramprakash, but the pair remained at the crease. Ramprakash was flawless and looked back to his form of the last few seasons; he kept the ball on the ground and did not offer a chance. He played the ball all around the ground and the pair were batting the game safe for Surrey.

Newman brought up his second century in successive matches just before tea; it had come off 176 balls and had contained 14 fours. The left-hander had taken his tally for the summer in the LV County Championship past 800 and then began to open his arms as the game was all but safe.

Then the moment came that all were waiting for, as Ramprakash cut Wainwright for four and reached the magical total. He had faced 196 balls and been at the crease for nearly four hours. The Surrey captain had waited since May to score his third hundred of the season and finished the day unbeaten on 112.

Surrey did lose Scott Newman when he was bowled by Wainwright for 129, after a stand of 259 with Ramprakash. Jonathan Batty was the second batsman of the day to go for a golden duck as Adil Rashid found his edge with a googly. But the match was over and Surrey left Headingley Carnegie with 8 points from the draw.
