Meaker moves into Under 19 World Cup

England Under 19s

Stuart Meaker has moved on from his pre-World Cup tour of Sri Lanka with the England under 19s and is now based in Malaysia for the real event. Here on www.surreycricket.com you can find out what he has been getting up to with the latest addition of his blog.

A fair amount has happened since my previous blog from Sri-Lanka all of which, if I was not playing cricket and training a lot, could quite literally take me a couple of seasons to write.

Our pre-world cup tour has now become the World Cup tour in Malaysia. We left Sri Lanka a bit early having beaten their Under 19 team in a brief three match series that followed the Triangular One Day series.

We arrived in Malaysia to find that we were staying in an amazing hotel called the Sunway Pyramid. It is really unique because they have built a water theme park on the side, which was the venue for a great deal of amusement over the first couple of days of our stay! After the intensity of the tour of Sri Lanka, it was really nice to spend a couple of days recuperating, particularly with plenty of ventures into the theme park.

After a couple of days, it was soon back to the training and match day practice before we embarked upon our first warm up game against, you guessed it, Pakistan! The motivational talk ahead of the match focused on how it would be a great chance to get one back on them after their rather convincing victory in our final triangular series clash back in Sri Lanka.

We bowled first and on a relatively small ground managed to confine them to a low score of 217. This match saw the return of Steven Finn from Middlesex, who has recovered from a groin injury for which he underwent surgery before we left for the tour of Sri Lanka. He immediately made an impact with two early wickets which put the Pakistanis on the back foot from ball one. In reply we got off to a solid start with Billy Godleman and James Taylor who putting together an opening stand of 110. Good work from the middle order meant that we were able to knock off the remainder of the runs in the penultimate over, which was a great result.

Our other warm up game against India followed a similar format albeit with a different result! This time we were put into bat first and the boys battled hard on a pitch that misbehaved a bit early on. We posted a respectable score of 220 and when Finny and Jimmy Harris were let loose the Indians were soon nine for three after 5 overs.

Unfortunately, we could not capitalise and the experienced Indian side managed to battle back and soon gave us nothing to talk about. They knocked off our runs with what seemed to be a relative ease without losing many more wickets, which was very difficult to take when back in the dressing room.

We will see whether all this build up and preparation will come to fruition with our first group stage game against Ireland tomorrow. I'm sure the Irish are capable of a shock result as seen in the main World Cup early last year, so we will make this performance as professional as possible and not underestimate our opponents. I will be back in touch soon to report on the match and let you know of some other developments.
