Jordan helps Surrey scurry to victory
Published 9 April 2008
A thrilling last over of Surrey’s clash with London rivals Middlesex saw Chris Jordan smash a six and a four to take his side to victory with one ball to spare.
With 14 to win from the final over Jordan hit former Brown Cap, Tim Murtagh, for a six and a four to take Surrey past the finish post.
Earlier in the day, Middlesex had won the toss and elected to bat first. This proved the right decision as openers Billy Godleman and Nick Compton took their side up to 133 before the latter fell almost immediately after passing his half century.
The Brown Caps worked hard to contain their opposition after their good start and managed to do so with some economical bowling from Jordan and Jimmy Ormond.
Godleman continued to play with freedom and went passed a nicely crafted century before being run out in a mix up with Owais Shah.
Jade Dernbach bowled with aggression and was rewarded with two wickets, including that of Shah, as Middlesex failed to capitalise on their good start. It was only because of a sprightly innings from Ed Joyce that the visitors accelerated their innings towards the close to reach the awkward target of 270.
Surrey’s innings faltered early on when Jon Batty and Mark Ramprakash both fell without scoring to leave the score eight for two. Scott Newman helped to rebuild the innings with a nicely paced 68 from 79 deliveries, which included some typically belligerent strokes. He was well supported in the middle of the innings by his captain Mark Butcher, who knocked the ball around the ground with ease. But sadly, both players fell within the space of eight runs, to leave Surrey in trouble on 116 for four.
New signing Usman Afzaal was joined at the crease by Ali Brown and the pair put together a well worked 74 run partnership before Afzaal fell for 45. When Brown went 17 runs later the pressure was suddenly on Chris Schofield and Jordan to score quickly without taking too many risks.
With 22 runs required for victory Schofield was run out for 36, leaving Jordan to take the lead and guide his side home. He found good support in Ormond, but when it came to the final over, he blasted the ball to the boundary twice to snatch the win. The young all rounder finished with 28 runs to go with his wicket earlier in the day and Surrey a second victory in their pre-season warm up matches.
The Brown Caps now travel to Beckenham to take on Kent in a two day match before their first first class fixture against Loughborough University starting on Saturday.
