Sponsors 6 Aside

Jardine Lloyd Thompson stormed to victory in the Surrey County Cricket Club sponsors’ six-aside competition being held at the Brit Insurance Oval on Wednesday.

In glorious weather and the fantastic surroundings of the Brit Insurance Oval, Jardine Lloyd Thompson battled hard all day to eventually win through and come out on top of the 12 teams that took part.

Each side competing on the day was assigned a Surrey player, with the likes of Mark Butcher, Mark Ramprakash and Matthew Nicholson all taking part. The 12 teams were split up into two groups, with the top two sides in each progressing through to the semi finals.

With two points for a win in the groups stages, there were a couple of teams that finished level on points at the end of the first stage.

A last minute Media Team entry played some good cricket against Pemberton Greenish and Tote Sport and although level on points with Jardine Lloyd Thompson they, controversially, did not advance through to the final stages. And so it was Jardine Lloyd Thompson and J M Finn & Co who went through from Group B.

In Group A, Frogmore showed their class against Bio Synergy and Bolt Allen. After some tough cricket in which some enormous sixes were hit, it was Frogmore and Bolt Allen who went through, leaving Brit Insurance, Drivers Jonas and Weston Homes to lick their wounds.

Two close semi finals saw JLT and Frogmore come out on top, however after some fantastically consistent striking Frogmore and their professional Jonathan Batty could not quite chase down the final total as JLT were crowned victorious in the 2008 Surrey Sponsors’ six aside.

Charlie Hodgson, Head of Sales at the Brit Insurance Oval, said: “I don’t think we could have expected better weather on the day. Everyone had a great time and I think that the Surrey pros were quite impressed with the way that some of the Surrey Sponsors struck the ball!”

“Congratulations must go to Jardine Lloyd Thompson for a great win but well done to everyone who took part.”
