Surrey Team at End of Season Awards Dinner

Last Friday evening saw the OCS Stand’s England Suite at the Brit Oval host Surrey County Cricket Club’s End of Season Awards Dinner.

In a fantastic setting, which was superbly presented by Oval Events, all had a fantastic evening watching the Surrey Stars collect their awards, whilst enjoying a three course dinner and coffee.
Mark Ramprakash
Ramprakash with the Brit Insurance Players Player of the Season

Mark Ramprakash followed up his PCA Player of the Year award from the previous Monday, by picking up a further two trophies in recognition of his tremendous season. The right-handed batsman was presented with firstly, the Brit Insurance Batsmen of the season and then shortly after, the Brit Insurance Player’s Player award.

Ramprakash, who will this weekend be taking part in the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, had his best year to date by finishing the season with an average of over 100. In doing so, he became only the fifth player in the history of First Class cricket in England to complete such an incredible feat. Only the great Sir Don Bradman (1938), Geoff Boycott (who did it twice in 1971 and 1979), Graham Gooch (1990) and Damien Martyn (2001) have reached this significant milestone.

In addition to this, Ramprakash also passed 2000 runs for the season, along the way breaking his own personal record twice as well as breaking the world record for scoring 150 runs or more in an innings in five consecutive Liverpool Victoria County Championship matches.
Jonathan Batty & Alan Butcher

James Benning, who this week signed a new contract with Surrey that will keep him at the Brit Oval for the next three years, also picked up a couple of honours. His season, which was twice interrupted through injury, showed significant improvement as he completely dominated the domestic One Day scene, following that up with more than useful performances in the Liverpool Victoria County Championship. These consistently good performances earned Benning the Brit Insurance Young Player of the Year Award.

The young master blaster also picked up the Marston’s moment of the season in recognition of his phenomenal performance against the Gloucestershire Gladiators in the C&G Trophy. In a match where neither side could qualify for the final of the competition, Benning played magnificently to bring Surrey within 2 runs of a famous victory. The Surrey batsman, who opens in one day matches, smashed 28 fours and four sixes in an electrifying innings of 189 that came off just 146 balls.

Nayan Doshi, who also signed a new two year contract with Surrey this week, was the joint winner, with Ian Salisbury, for the Brit Insurance Bowling Award. The pair rolled back the years to when Salisbury and Saqlain Mushtaq spun Surrey to three Championship titles in four years. Salisbury regained his brilliant form, to bowl with superb control and as such take 59 Liverpool Victoria Championship wickets. Captain and Coach

He was brilliantly supported by Doshi, who followed up his excellent Championship form, where he took 50 wickets, by taking the One Day competitions by storm. The left arm spinner became the leading wicket taker in all of Twenty20 cricket taking his season tally for Surrey to 96 wickets, including 19 in the NatWest Pro40 and 21 in the Twenty20 round matches.

Mark Butcher picked up the two monthly awards of, Marston’s moment and Brit Insurance player of Septemeber. These two awards were in recognition of his fantastic month, in which he lead his side to promotion to Division One of the Liverpool Victoria County Championship, as well having a purple patch with the bat, where he scored 587 runs in all forms of the game.

Neil Saker was rewarded for a good season by being given the Brit Insurance most improved player. Saker held a regular spot in the Championship side taking 14 wickets, whilst making useful contributions down the order, registering his maiden Championship half century against Essex at Colchester.

To cap off a great awards ceremony alongside Azhar Mahmood (Peter Frost Fielding Award) and Stewart Walters (Bio-Synergy Fitness Award), Jonathan Batty was awarded the Graham Kersey Man of the Season. The wicket keeper had a brilliant season, where he narrowly missed out on scoring 1000 Championship runs at the same time as taking 53 dismissals. This effort combined with his all round energy both on and off the field was rewarded with the thoroughly deserved Team Man award.
