Collins destructive for Barbados

Pedro Collins

Surrey’s latest acquisition, Pedro Collins, demonstrated his destructive nature with the new ball to set a new world record in his side’s opening match of the season in the Caribbean.

Surrey’s latest addition to the squad, Collins, produced a record-breaking spell of left-arm swing bowling, grabbing seven for 11, to shoot out West Indies under 19s for a measly 18 in their Zone A match of the KFC Cup One Day tournament.

Collins snared the scalps of Rashidi Boucher, Darren Bravo and skipper Steven Jacobs, all for ducks, as the under-19s reeled on two for four in the fifth over. Fidel Edwards soon sent back Devon Thomas, inducing an edge to first slip, before Collins polished off the tail with the wickets of Andre Creary, Shacoya Thomas, Veerasammy Permaul, and Dawes.

It took just 5.5 overs for Barbados to knock off the target but it was not before they lost Martin Nurse and Dale Richards. Fast bowler Jason Dawes claimed both wickets.

Over the other side of the world both James Benning and Stewart Walters have got their winter exploits underway, having flown to Western Australia to play Grade cricket. Regular readers of www.surreycricket.com might remember following Walters’ incredible season down under last year. The right-handed Surrey man scored consistent runs throughout the Australian summer to not only gain selection into Western Australian State second team but also amass over 900 runs and in the process narrowly miss out on breaking Alec Stewart’s batting record at the same club, Midland Guildford.

Walters moved to Perth Cricket Club over the Australian winter and has been made captain of his new side. He has been joined by Surrey team mate, Benning, who will open the batting.

Although they got off to a winning start, neither of the Surrey men had a particularly good opening match. Benning got off to a flying start at the top of the innings, blasting six fours in typical style before being caught behind for 26. Walters, coming at number four, was also caught but for just one run. Nevertheless, his side managed to post a fantastic total of 384 before bowling Mount Lawley District all out for 123 to give them victory on first innings.

Meanwhile in New South Wales, Matthew Nicholson is showing off his talents with the bat. Surrey’s former oversea player scored a magnificent first innings century against Western Australia to dig his side out of trouble. He then picked up two wickets in WA’s first innings and one in their second as NSW narrowly missed out on forcing a victory in their third Pura Cup match.
