Biography

Matthew Spriegel’s all-round talents always seem to get him a game. Spriegel’s left-handed batting can be used at the top of the order or midway down, while his off-spin deliveries have proved valuable at the end of one-day innings. His fielding is reliable too – which goes to prove that you can never write Matt off. In 2006, Spriegel’s stream of consistent performances won him a place in Surrey’s Second XI, despite being told that he was unlikely to feature much in the squad. It says much for Matt’s cricketed sense that he was made Loughborough UCCE captain in his first year

Player facts

Most memorable individual performance playing for Surrey?:
In 2006, we played Kent in a Second Eleven Championship match at Beckenham. I made 96 with the bat and took 7/85 with the ball. Unfortunately we lost!!

Favourite food:
Mum’s cooking, especially the Roast Beef with Yorkshire pudding and plenty of gravy!

Favourite TV programme:
The Office

Most favoured holiday destination:
Perth Australia. I spent 6 months there in my gap year and loved it.

Most embarrassing moment:
Slipping over when fielding for the first team in front of what was a pretty decent sized crowd. It came to me quickly and I misread the spin when it bounced and down I went.

What was the first CD or record you purchased?:
Now 35- A compilation of the best hits in the Charts around 1995/1996. Must be up to about Now 60 by now!

If you could be a professional sportsman in something other than cricket, what sport would you choose and why?:
Golf so I could travel the world. First stop Augusta!

Most admired Surrey player of all time:
Mark Ramprakash

If you were down to your last £10, how would you spend it?:
I did owe Chris Murtagh some petrol money for driving me around but now that I’m learning to drive myself, I’d probably use the cash to fund my own driving lessons!
