Kenny wins Twenty 20 Mascot Race

Kenny Kennington

It was the culmination of over six month’s hard training for the Surrey mascot Kenny Kennington at the Rose Bowl on Saturday afternoon. Hours spent in the Gym and running around the streets of Kennington, obviously, paid off in the infamous mascot derby. Mascots pulling out last minute and late registration forms arriving from Headingley did not faze Kenny as he went through his meticulous pre race preparations.

Kenny started the race in the front row of the starting grid and took no time in establishing a significant lead over the chasing pack. Kenny led from start to finish clearing the obstacles with consummate ease. Once the “ball pool” compared by many to the water jump at Aintree and the obstacle Kenny feared most was cleared it was plain sailing for the young dog from South London. He crossed the finish line arms aloft in the sweltering heat to the roar of 20,000 cheering fans.

"I felt very confident, very relaxed,” Kenny told reporters. "I could definitely have gone a bit quicker but obviously to win the mascot derby is a dream come true”

You can see Kenny in action on Sunday 17th when the Surrey Brown Caps take on Northants Steelbacks at The Brit Oval. The games starts at 1:45pm.
