Stewart Walters’ continued form with the bat for his side Midland Guildford has lead him to target the club batting record of 1001 runs in the season.

The record, which is held by former Surrey and England legend, Alec Stewart, currently stands at 1000 runs and Walters is presently on track as he is totalling 743 runs with four matches still remaining.

The Surrey all rounder gave himself an early Christmas present, as he registered a huge century in the last match before the festive break.

Helping to bowl the opposition out for 188, by picking up three wickets for 30 runs, Walters had time to bat on the first evening ending six not out. He proceeded to bat through the majority of the day the following week, to take his side past the winning total and pick up maximum batting points before he was finally caught behind for his highest first grade total of 179.

For many the festive break would have meant a glitch in form, but this was not the case for Walters, who started the new year with more runs.

Taking on Joondalup, Midland batted first and found themselves struggling on 80 for four at lunch. However this was soon to change as the Surrey man held it all together to score a brilliant 80 and guide his side to the decent total of 291.

The next day, the all rounder was back influencing the game again as he picked up a vital wicket, his 14th of the season, which started Joondalup’s collapse and stimulated his side’s victory by 36 runs.

Typical of his hard working attitude, Walters made use of the seven overs remaining in the day by padding up to have another bat. His work ethic was rewarded as he added more runs to his season total by finishing with 22.

Helping his side to two consecutive victories either side of Christmas, Walters is very happy with the way things are going.

“I am very happy with the way that I am playing at the moment. It was great to score my personal best prior to Christmas and to follow it up after a couple of weeks off, was extremely satisfying.”

“I have set myself a target of beating Alec’s (Alec Stewart) club record but in all honesty, I just want to continue my good form and hopefully take it into the season back in England.”
