Surrey stars Playing for Success

Last week former England and Surrey Stars Mark Ramprakash and Mark Butcher supported Surrey County Cricket Club as they hosted the Playing for Success Awards evening in the Ashes suite in the OCS Stand at the Brit Oval.

Scott Newman and Rory Hamilton-Brown joined Surrey Captain, Butcher, to give out the awards to more than 120 children from eight different schools, who had completed the 10 week term. This was then followed by a surprise visit from Ramprakash, who had travelled straight from the BBC Studios after his dancing training.

Playing for Success targets primary and secondary school students and aims to inspire and motivate young people outside of the school environment. Taking place in the Brit Oval’s Ben Hollioake Learning Centre and Lambeth Hall, the sessions, which are arranged for after school, are designed to motivate, encourage and develop self-esteem, confidence and key study skills, especially in literacy, numeracy and information and communications technology.

In conjunction with the academics and as a key addition to the course, the students also receive cricket coaching from the community coaches at Surrey County Cricket Club.

Commenting on the evening, Surrey County Cricket Club’s Community Manager, George Foster, said: “Surrey County Cricket Club are extremely pleased to have a successful Playing for Success scheme here at the Brit Oval. The awards ceremony alone demonstrates how many young people in Lambeth are benefiting from the scheme and we look forward to enjoying a long and successful partnership.”

He added: “Thanks must also go to the Department of Education and Skills and Lambeth Council for their continued support.”
