Surrey seconds lose narrowly to MCC YC

Read the latest Surrey second team match report from their match against MCC YC.
Surrey’s first match in this year’s Trophy competition found the side at a new venue at St George’s College in Weybridge. The MCC YC captain Mark Tomsett won the toss and chose to bat first. Stuart Meaker took an early wicket to dismiss Charl Malan caught and bowled , but Vivian and Tomsett looked like building a useful partnership. The introduction of Rob Frylinck into the attack had immediate effect as he took the wicket of Tomsett in his first over and then bowled Woodman in his second. As Frylinck bowled in tandem with Murtaza Hussain MCC YCs were reduced to 69-7, with only Vivian (30) providing much resistance. Meaker returned to account for Jonathan Miles at 87-8. However the MCC tail seemed to be made of sterner stuff than their upper order and a stand of 80 for the ninth wicket between Faisal Shahid and Kyle Hodnett seriously held up the Surrey attack. Hodnett was eventually bowled by Tim Linley for 23 with the score on 167 , and the last man , Oliver Saffell was run out by a throw from Jason Roy , leaving Shahid not out on 47 and the team all out for 170. Frylinck finished with excellent figures of 4-2 , Murtaza Hussain took 2-23 and Meaker 2-40.
The Surrey innings took a very similar pattern to that of their opponents and they plunged to 95-8 with only Paul Harrison (22) and Stuart Meaker (16) making any headway against the tight attack of Jonathan Miles (3-23) and Van Vuuren (also 3-23). But the last pair at the wicket Murtaza Hussain (40) and Tim Linley (23*) worked hard to build a partnership with sensible batting – working the singles and punishing any loose balls. Their stand of 69 showed up the lack of application of the earlier batsmen and in an exciting finish they edged closer to the target. Needing six from the last over they tried their luck one last time and Murtaza Hussain was run out by a direct hit from Van Vuuren which left Surrey four runs short and victory going to the MCC YCs.
