Surrey Kruis-ified in swinging conditions
Published 30 July 2008
A five wicket haul from Deon Kruis helped Yorkshire dismiss Surrey for 204 on day one at Headingley Carnegie. The Yorkshire attack made the most of helpful bowling conditions as Surrey will rue some loose shot making in claiming only one bonus point. Stewart Walters top-scored with 40, but a lack of application with the bat leave Surrey under pressure after the first day.
The players were welcomed to the ground under dark clouds and the whole morning was lost to light showers at Headingley Carnegie. The covers had been on and off but the umpires were left to declare an early lunch and play finally started at 1.30 pm. Mark Ramprakash won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a good dry batting track. The overhead conditions were however ideal for swing movement and Tim Bresnan and Darren Gough made life difficult in the early moments. Scott Newman took advantage of some wide swinging balls and stroked six boundaries on his way to a quick 29 before he was out LBW to Bresnan, leaving Surrey 41 for one.
Stewart Walters and Ramprakash were watchful against the excessive swing from Bresnan. However, Deon Kruis replaced Bresnan at the Football Stand End and produced an unplayable delivery to remove Ramprakash. Kruis found the perfect length, pitching the ball on middle and moving it away to clip the top of off-stump. It was a perfect delivery to remove Ramprakash for 6 and leave Surrey 69 for two.
Three balls later and Jonathan Batty was also unlucky, to fall for a duck, as he drove and edged the ball wide of third slip, only to see Richard Pyrah dive full length and pluck the ball out of the air one-handed. Two brilliant pieces of cricket from Yorkshire had the visitors struggling at 69 for three. It got worse for Surrey as Usman Afzaal was trapped LBW on the crease by Kruis for 1.
Meanwhile Walters was flourishing and was playing some fluent strokes. Coming off some great form for the second eleven last week against Sussex at the Brit Oval, Walters found his form again and cut, pulled and drove positively. He picked Pyrah up for one sweetly struck six over mid-wicket off the back foot. The same shot would however be his down-fall as he lofted the ball straight down deep-square leg off Bresnan for 40. Surrey getting to tea on day one at 121 for 5.
After tea Surrey would collapse to 204 all out as each batsman came and went in a short space of time. The Yorkshire captain, Gough, turned to Adil Rashid to remove Matthew Nicholson and Jade Dernbach, both LBW. The pitch was offering some turn, which will please Surrey if they are to bowl last in this match. Matthew Spriegel looked secure and played with some fight, but he was undone when Kruis picked up his fifth wicket. The Yorkshire seamer managed to find his way through Spriegel’s sound defence to remove his off bail and Spriegel departed for 29.
There was no holding back by Pedro Collins and Saqlain Mushtaq as they played some extravagant shots to take Surrey past 200 and to pick up one batting bonus point. Both men reaching 20 before a mix up saw Collins run out and the end of a disappointing display of batting. Only Walters and Spriegel applied themselves for a period of time and although the conditions were tricky in the early stages, the visitors would have felt they could have done better.
Yorkshire’s openers, Chris Taylor and Andrew Gale had easier conditions to bat in as sunshine fell over Headingley Carnegie for the last few overs of the day. They looked more comfortable than Surrey and were not facing such predominant swing. The Surrey attack did beat the bat on a few occasions, but Yorkshire reached the close at 50 without loss.
