Spriegel to make Surrey debut
Published 29 May 2008
Matthew Spriegel is likely to be included in the squad for Surrey’s LV County Championship match against Somerset at Whitgift.
Spriegel, who played against Surrey as the captain of Loughborough University at the beginning of the season, impressed both Alan and Mark Butcher with the half century he scored in that match. He has played in the last couple of Surrey’s Friends Provident Trophy matches bowling eight economical overs against Essex and batting at number three against Sussex yesterday.
Butcher will look to continue his awesome form in the LV County Championship. The Surrey skipper scored the third double century of his career against Yorkshire last week. Fellow left hander, Usman Afzaal, will also look to follow up his second innings hundred that came against Yorkshire as Surrey push for their opening victory in the Championship.
Chris Jordan will return to the first team having had a run out in the seconds at Hampshire this week. He comes into the squad to join fast bowlers, Matthew Nicholson, Pedro Collins.
In injury news, Chris Schofield continues to make good progress in recovering from his fractured left thumb. He has been bowling in the nets this week.
Surrey have a great record against Somerset having won 48 and lost only ten of the 82 matches where the two teams have met. The predominant result in the last ten Championship matches has been a draw (five matches have ended in a draw), however Surrey beat the Sabres at Taunton back in June of 2006.
The full Surrey squad to take on Somerset is as follows:
Newman
Spriegel
Ramprakash
Butcher (c)
Afzaal
Batty (wk)
Nicholson
Jordan
Mushtaq
Collins
Dernbach
Benning
