Second day lost to satuated pitch at Blackpool
Published 28 August 2008
The second day in a row of the LV County Championship match against Lancashire at Blackpool was abandoned. The outfield at Stanley Park has not improved overnight and the umpires again had to call off the days play without a ball bowled.
The weather in Blackpool has not helped in drying the ground and it is so soft that the safety of the players has been considered. The bowling run-ups are in a particularly bad way and there is a danger that no play could be possible over the four days.
Surrey cricket manager Alan Butcher spoke to Surrey TV at Blackpool and has said ‘he has never seen a pitch like it’. To listen to Butcher’s thoughts on the ground and the prospects of any play in the match, click here.
Both teams are being frustrated at a time in the season when points are crucial, and more so to Surrey, who need to pick up every point they can in order to move out of the relegation zone. The worry at this stage is that both teams will leave Blackpool with just 4 points a piece and that would leave Surrey with it all to do in their remaining three matches.
