Mark Ramprakash notched up his 93rd career century to take Surrey into a commanding position before the rain spoilt another afternoon’s play at Guildford on day two of the LV County Championship.

Ramprakash and Mark Butcher began the morning for Surrey and took their side past 200 before Surrey’s captain was caught behind off Kabir Ali for 46. Ramprakash continued to play fluently and soon reached his half century.

Butcher’s replacement, Stewart Walters, played nicely to get himself going and together with Ramprakash started to take Surrey into a good position. Striking the ball beautifully the pair ran well between the wickets to take their side past 250 and gain their second batting point.

Ramprakash reached his 40th first-class hundred for Surrey shortly before lunch when he flicked Doug Bollinger for two on the leg side to enhance his already impressive record against Worcestershire - the right hander has scored five centuries in his last seven innings against the county.

Sadly for Surrey however, Walters was bowled for 30 ending a 58 run partnership that looked to be taking the game away from the visitors. Rikki Clarke, Walters’ replacement, could not reproduce last year’s magnificent form that saw him score a career best 214, as he was caught at mid-on for only 14, attempting a pull shot off Ali.

With the score on 297 for five, the rain set in for the afternoon ruining any chance of play for nearly four hours. Remarkably, the sun came out and after a terrific effort by the ground staff, the game resumed for at 5:40pm for an hour.

Although Ramprakash accelerated his innings, the short session belonged to Worcestershire, as they picked up three wickets for 50 runs including the prize scalp of Ramprakash for 142. Surrey went to the close of play only three runs short of a fourth batting point on 347 for eight with Matthew Nicholson and Harbhajan Singh the not out batsmen.
