Rain the winner on day two at Headingley Carnegie
Published 31 July 2008
Only an hour of play was possible on day two at Headingley Carnegie due to heavy rain. The players left the field at midday and could only watch as the puddles formed on the outfield, after Yorkshire had added 30 runs to their overnight score.
At 1.40 pm umpires Jeremy Lloyds and Richard Illingworth called off the remainder of the second day at Headingley Carnegie. After 14.3 overs of the morning session the rain began to fall and was relentless, leaving the umpires with no other alternative.
The hour of play possible saw Matthew Nicholson bowl a tight, but non-penetrating spell from the Rugby Stand end. The pitch was more lifeless than on day one for the quicker bowlers and Nicholson bowled a stump-to-stump line without really threatening. Andrew Gale stroked a cut shot off Saqlain Mushtaq to the boundary and reached fifty, as the Yorkshire opening pair continued to add to their highest partnership of the season. Chris Taylor took his time as Surrey kept the ball in good areas and only 30 runs were added in the hour of play. Chris Jordan did manage to find the edge of Gale’s bat, only to see Nicholson put down the chance at slip as the Yorkshire opening pair remained unbroken on 80.
After the day was abandoned Surrey TV spoke to Stewart Walters on the players balcony. Click here to watch the interview.
