Prolific weekend for the Surrey young guns
Published 21 July 2008
It was a weekend littered with high class performances from a number of Surrey’s younger players.
Laurie Evans ensured that Malden Wanderers’ Cockspur Cup campaign continued with a high class hundred at Havant Cricket Club on a fine Sunday afternoon on the South Coast. Evans scored 110 off only 118 balls and was ably supported by another Surrey youth player in Alan Cope who constructed a patient 45 from 68 balls. Malden Wanderers finished with 226 from their 50 overs and it proved too much for Havant who were all out for 202.
Meanwhile back in the capital, England U19 bowler Stuart Meaker showed his class against a strong Wimbledon side who are currently top of the Surrey Championship Premier Division. Meaker removed Wimbledon’s top three front line batsmen with a brilliant spell of new ball bowling leaving the South West London side reeling at 49-3. He finished with 6-73 off 17 overs which included the wicket of former England off spinner Richard Dawson. Meaker’s day had not finished with his bowling as he pushed Normandy towards their victory target of 250, however they were to finish short of the final hurdle with Meaker left stranded on 37 off just 35 balls.
Elsewhere in London, Reigate Priory found success against their visitors Guildford. Jason Roy, who found fame at the Brit Oval during the Brown Caps Twenty20 game against Middlesex, was again finding the headlines. In the field Reigate were inspired by superb fielding from Roy who removed one of Guildford’s danger men and another Surrey Youth team cricketer Pete Young with a direct hit run out. It was when Reigate batted however that Roy showed his class scoring 64 from only 47 balls including 11 fours and one six. This lay the perfect foundation for the Reigate middle order who reached their victory target only two wickets down and with over 18 overs remaining.
Stuart Meaker, Laurie Evans and Jason Roy will be hoping to take this form into to the Second XI Championship game against Sussex at the Brit Oval that starts today.
