A packed Brit Insurance Oval could not cheer the Brown Caps to victory as Eoin Morgan clipped the ball off his legs to take the Crusaders to the London Derby double.

Morgan and former Surrey Brown Cap, Ben Scott, put together an unbeaten 70 run partnership for the fourth wicket to canter their side to victory and as such the London Derby double for the first time since in the competition’s history.

Surrey struggled in the opening part of their innings after Mark Ramprakash had won the toss and elected to bat. Scott Newman and the Surrey captain struck early boundaries but after the latter followed his left-handed opening batsman to the dressing rooms with the score on 30. Surrey then lost Chris Murtagh and overseas player Abdul Razzaq with only eight runs added to the score.

It was thanks to Jonathan Batty that Surrey got up to a respectable score. He joined Usman Afzaal, who was playing fluently, and ensured that Surrey made it through their 20 overs. He finished on 42 not out from only 36 deliveries and once again demonstrated his all round capabilities. The Brown Caps finished on 139 for eight, giving Middlesex an awkward target in the fading light.

Surrey started well with the ball thanks to Jade Dernbach and Jimmy Ormond, who kept the Crusaders openers at bay. It was only when Surrey got rid of Billy Godleman that the scoring rate started to increase as Tyrone Henderson smeared 26 off just 15 deliveries to take his side into a good position.

The introduction of spin gave Ramprakash’s side some hope as Chris Schofield and Afzaal picked up quick wickets to leave the visitors 70 for three. However, Scott got his innings off to a flyer with nicely struck boundaries whilst Morgan knocked the ball into the gaps.

The pair finished on 31 and 36 respectively off only 28 deliveries and took their team to victory with nine deliveries to spare.

Surrey will now go into the second half of season, starting with the LV County Championship on Sunday against Kent.
