No play again on day three at Blackpool
Published 29 August 2008
The third day of the LV County Championship match at Blackpool has again been lost due to an unfit pitch at Stanley Park. The ground is still not suitable for the match with Lancashire to begin after the conditions have not improved.
Umpires Jeremy Lloyds and Nick Cook did not hesitate in calling off the third day at Blackpool because of the ground being too soft. The main considerations are the bowler’s run-ups and how risky the ground is for the player’s safety. Umpire Lloyds joined Mark Church on Surrey TV and said that the game ‘could become a farce, with sides having to resort to only bowling their spinners.’
Both teams got together and discussed the possibility of the entire match being called off, as it looks unlikely that the ground will improve sufficiently enough to allow play to begin. Yet, at this stage the players will return to see if play is possible on the final day. Both Surrey and Lancashire look likely to leave Blackpool with just four points each and leave the visitors still on the bottom of the Division One standings.
