Newman falls on day spoiled by rain
Published 30 May 2007
Unfortunately for Surrey and Kent supporters the first day of the Whitgift festival was a wet one and only eight overs were possible when play was finally abandoned at around 3.30pm due to heavy showers.
The visitors had the better of what little play there was by taking the wicket of Scott Newman, trapped leg before off the bowling of Andrew Hall. Conditions were tricky for the Surrey batsmen after Kent had won the toss and elected to field. The ball was seaming around and Batty (2 not out) and Mark Ramprakash (5 not out) had to battle hard against some good line and length bowling to ensure that Newman’s wicket was the only one to fall. However, Ramprakash had some good fortune when he gave a sharp chance to short leg before he had got off the mark off Hall. A few deliveries later, in typical Ramprakash style, he hammered a beautiful off drive for four to rub salt into the Kent wounds.
Surrey were on 18 for one when the heavens opened at 11.30am and from then on, the rain continued to come down and the umpires finally decided that enough was enough.
Subject to bad weather, play will resume again tomorrow at 11am. Tickets will be available at the main gate for just £12 adults and £6 for Under 16’s.
