Must win for Surrey
Published 20 June 2008
Alan Butcher has backed the same squad to go to Chelmsford this evening and start the five match winning streak his side require to give themselves a chance to qualify into the Twenty20 Cup quarter finals.
Surrey have only picked up one win in their first five matches leaving them second bottom of the South Division on just two points at the half-way mark in the qualifying stages.
Behind Middlesex at the top, Essex are in second leading a group of three teams on six points, but will be without their key player, Ravi Bopara, who is on International duty. A win for Surrey this evening will put them within striking distance of Kent and Hampshire who also have six points.
Saqlain Mushtaq is likely to play this evening after picking up three wickets at just six runs per over in Surrey’s loss to Hampshire on Wednesday evening. Abdul Razzaq and Mark Ramprakash will also look to continue their form with the bat to take Surrey to victory.
In injury news, James Benning will miss this evening’s match with a continuation of his lower back problem. He will see a specialist today to asses the damage, however he is hopeful of playing on Sunday in the Brown Caps’ clash with Sussex.
Mark Butcher continues to recover from surgery to his left knee. Click here to see an interview on Surrey TV with Surrey’s physio, Jon Hockey.
The full squad to take on the Essex Eagles in tonight’s match is as follows:
Newman
Ramprakash
Brown
Afzaal
Batty
Razzaq
Jordan
Schofield
Dernbach
Spriegel
Collins
Mushtaq
