Goodwin's effort thwarts chance of first Champ victory for Surrey
Published 19 May 2007
An unbeaten 205 from Murray Goodwin and a century from Captain Chris Adams helped Sussex secure a draw and deny Surrey their first victory in the 2007 Championship.
Goodwin struck a magnificent 28 boundaries in a heroic innings that saw him bat right the way through the day. He had fantastic support from Adams who was in his typically bullish mood to make sure that Surrey did not have a chance of taking the remaining seven Sussex wickets to give them victory.
Resuming play this morning on 35 for two and trailing by 226 runs, Sussex got off to a very slow start as Goodwin and Nash set about batting their side through the day.
After negotiating the first hour, it was the introduction of the left-arm spin of Nayan Doshi that got Surrey the all-important breakthrough as he had Nash caught by Ian Salisbury for 46. However, this was to be the only joy of Surrey’s day as Sussex’s captain, Adams, joined Goodwin to bat right the way through the day and thwart Surrey’s hopes of victory.
The pair batted superbly, right the way through the remaining sessions to take their side to 372 for three and lead Surrey by 111. It was a this point, with only half an hour to go in the day’s play, that both Mark Butcher and Adams agreed that no result other than a draw could come from the game.
