Robert Frylinck makes a successful debut for the Surrey Brown Caps

With a number of new names recently surfacing in the Surrey line up www.surreycricket.com takes a look at whereabouts the likes of Robert Frylinck, Alex Tudor and Lee Hodgson have come from.

Robert Frylinck a medium paced bowler and aggressive right hand batsman, joined the Surrey Brown Caps earlier in August on a contract until the end of 2009 and made a successful debut in the NatWest Pro40 victory over the Northamptonshire Steelbacks at the Brit Oval on August 17.

The 23 year old, who has First Class, One Day and Twenty20 experience with KwaZulu-Natal and the Natal Dolphins in South African domestic cricket, has a One Day batting average of 39.09 and a highly impressive bowling average of 23.44.

Frylinck, a South African national who qualifies for Surrey as a ‘Kolpak’ signing has combined appearances for the Surrey Second XI this season with a contract at Benwell Hill CC in the Northern Rock North East Premier League, having replaced Surrey’s Pedro Collins as the club’s overseas signing in 2008.

On his Surrey debut against Northamptonshire, Frylinck returned figures of 3/52, taking the key wicket of centurion Riki Wessels as well as their dangerous pair of South African Johan’s – van der Wath and Louw.

Alex Tudor a fast medium bowler and useful lower order batsman, has rejoined Surrey on loan until the end of the season from Essex and made his second debut in the recent LV County Championship draw with Sussex.

Tudor initially impressed and made his England debut against Australia in Perth in 1998. He played ten Test Matches between then and 2002, including a memorable 99 not out, scored as nightwatchman against New Zealand in 1999.

After suffering a series of injuries, Tudor left the Brit Oval at the end of the 2004 season, signing for Essex where he stayed for four years. After finding himself falling down the pecking order at Chelmsford, Tudor sought regular cricket elsewhere, arriving at Surrey in mid-August.

He made his first team return against Sussex, scoring a quick-fire thirty in the first innings and then impressing with economical bowling, including a two wicket over as Surrey bowled in the second innings.

Lee Hodgson was handed his One Day debut for Surrey against the Warwickshire Bears after a series of impressive performances for the county’s second XI.

Against Yorkshire at York in mid August Hodgson – who has been on the staff of the MCC Young Cricketers since 2006 – starred with 85 in the first innings, followed up by 4/44 in the host’s only knock of the game.

Hodgson is also a fine fielder, taking two catches on his debut – including ex Surrey spinner Ian Salisbury – and Surrey Cricket Manager Alan Butcher is confident the 22-year-old’s presence in the squad will be a boost, particularly to the Brown Cap’s One Day ambitions.

Butcher told www.surreycricket.com: “We have been tracking Lee for a number of years and has now played regularly for the seconds over the last month and has impressed us.

“He put in a good all round performance at York and is also a good fielder. We think he’s somebody that will certainly improve our one day capabilities.”
