ICC Policy on Alcohol for matches at the Brit Oval
Published 24 October 2005
The ICC has implemented a ban on the importation of alcohol, glass containers and metal cans across all grounds hosting International Cricket in the world from 2006.
Following close consultation with the Police and Health and Safety advisors this regulation will apply to all “Category A” matches at The Brit Oval from 2006 onwards. Games defined as “Category B” will be unaffected by these changes.
Category A matches at the Brit Oval next year are all matches under the control of the England & Wales Cricket Board. The ground will host the following next year;
- NatWest Twenty20 Internationals - 28 & 29 June
- npower Test Match - 9 to 13 August
- NatWest Series One Day International 5 September
In addition to this, the Australian Rules fixture as well as any domestic Twenty20 Cup matches will also possess the “Category A” status.
Despite the ban, the Brit Oval will ensure that their bar facilities are managed in the most efficient way possible to meet any extra demands. There have also been discussions with some wine suppliers to widen the range of wines available inside the ground.
The policy has been introduced for a number of reasons. The most important being that should an incident occur during a major match, the control of the ground is made significantly easier by the closure of all bars, which would then prevent any further consumption from personal supplies so the incident could be controlled.

The ground will also be providing plastic containers for beer in preference to glass or cans, which have sometimes in the past been used as dangerous missiles or projectiles.
Category B matches on the other hand have not been affected by these changes and spectators to Liverpool Victoria County Championship, ECB Trophy and Pro40 League matches will be able to bring into the ground a maximum of 4 x 500ml cans of beer or lager or a 750ml plastic container of wine per person. No other forms of alcohol are permitted.
Decisions on any other events at the Brit Oval will be taken in conjunction with the relevant organisers or rights holders prior to the sale of tickets.
