Four days of frustration ends in stalemate at Canterbury
Published 7 September 2008
Surrey drew with Kent and took seven points from the match after a final day focussed solely on bonus points. Bad light ended a dramatic chase for a further point for each team after Surrey had declared on 307 for 9 at tea.
The first two sessions of the day were fraught with delays as bad light and frequent showers were stagnating proceedings. The game was becoming somewhat of a non-event and the umpires were making some questionable decisions to take the players off, much to the frustrations of the Kent faithful in the stands. Amidst the stoppages Matthew Spriegel and Usman Afzaal were keeping their concentration and slowly, but surely eking out some runs as Surrey chased bonus batting points. With no chance for a result it was only bonus points to play for and the left-handed pair were patient in reaching the given targets. Run scoring was hard work on a wicket that was damp and two-paced. That together with a very slow outfield made for a lot of running between the wickets and few boundaries being hit.
Usman did capitalise on any width on his off-side and played the cut shot with his unique flair on a number of occasions. Usman then reached fifty with a cover drive for two off Yasir Arafat, as the sixth wicket stand went past fifty and Surrey picked up a further bonus point by reaching 250. Usman then fell for 67 as Ryan McLaren angled the ball across the left-hander, Usman played loosely away from his body and Martin van Jaarsveld took the catch at second slip, Surrey 276 for 6.
Amjad Khan claimed a two wickets in an over that stunted Surrey’s attempts towards further batting points. He had Alex Tudor brilliantly caught by Geraint Jones down the leg-side from a top-edged hook for 13. Then 5 balls later he had James Ormond caught at first slip after a tentative push at the ball for a duck. Spriegel was all the while calmly stroking the ball around and accumulating. The tall left-hander looks assured at the crease and capable of batting long innings. He remained there to take Surrey to 300 and the third bonus point with a lofted cover drive for four off Khan. On the stroke of tea Saqlain Mushtaq was bowled by McLaren, which led to Surrey declaring on 307 for 9.
Surrey thought their best efforts to gain more bonus points would be to try and pick up some Kent wickets. The bowlers would have been happy to finally get out there for the final session of the match, but their hopes of quick wickets were dashed by an outstanding opening partnership between Joe Denly and Robert Key. The pair had 200 in their minds in just 32 overs to claim themselves a point. The two were destructive and played shots all around the ground off both front and back foot as the Surrey bowlers all clocked up runs against their names.
The crowd were being entertained as both batsmen went past fifty and were on course for an extra point. Then Alex Tudor made the breakthrough and had Denly caught behind for 80, off just 60 balls.
The umpires ended the game when they asked the players to leave the field for bad light. Both captains were keen to continue in search of the bonus points, but it was taken out of their hands as 12 overs were lost and the entertainment came to an end. Kent finished on 160 for one, Key 76 not out.
Surrey remain at the bottom of the LV County Championship after picking up 7 points from the draw. They move within 18 points of Yorkshire and Lancashire who lie in the two places above them.
