England and Rory do it again

Rory Hamilton-Brown scored 34 at over a run a ball in England under 19's second consecutive win.

England Under 19 further boosted their confidence going into the Under 19 World Cup in Sri Lanka with two impressive victories against the Malaysia Cricket Association President’s XI over the weekend.

England made it three wins out of three during their acclimatisation period in Malaysia with a seven-wicket victory on Saturday which was followed by a 103-run success against the same opponents on Sunday.

In the second game of the trip at the Royal Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur, the hosts won the toss and made a steady start to their innings after electing to bat.

Sustained discipline with the ball and good work in the field ensured England Under 19 retained control thoughout and wickets fell quickly in the latter overs when the hosts were looking to accelerate.

Captain Moeen Ali and supersub Huw Waters claimed three wickets apiece as the President’s XI were dismissed for 216 after 48.2 overs.

The total proved inadequate as all the England Under 19 batsmen scored freely on a good pitch, with Mark Stoneman (46) and Mark Nelson (47) just missing out on half-centuries.

Ali followed up his hundred in the first game with 76 not out to clinch the man-of-the-match award and help England Under 19 reach their target in the 36th over.

The venue for the third match took the England Under 19 squad to the Kinrara Oval, where the future Malaysian Cricket Academy will be based.

Construction of the pavilion and changing rooms will be completed by July, but the pitch and outfield were in superb condition for the match.

The tourists won the toss and most of the batsmen managed to spend some time in the middle, and batting the full 50 overs was another sign of the improvements being shown.

Steve Mullaney led the way with 57 from 64 balls and there were useful contributions from Nelson (38), Rory Hamilton-Brown (34) and Robert Woodman (32) as England closed on 241 for nine.

Nelson then claimed three early wickets to put England Under 19 in control and disciplined bowling and good catching made scoring difficult until a ninth-wicket partnership of 38 took the MCA Presidents XI’s total to respectability on 138 all out from 42.3 overs.

Rory also bowled five useful overs of off-spin, demonstrating his all round value to the side.

The man of the match was awarded to Steve Mullaney for his all-round performance after he also claimed a wicket.

England are now set to head to Sri Lanka where their World Cup campaign will begin against Nepal on February 6.
