Surrey’s fast bowler Jade Dernbach was at Shepperton Cricket Club at the weekend to support the club’s effort to revamp the ground by building a new pavilion.

Shepperton cricket club are Surrey’s flagship NatWest CricketForce and focus club. NatWest CricketForce is an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) volunteering initiative aimed at rejuvenating the nation's cricketing facilities.

Since the end of the 2006 season, Shepperton have gone about making huge strides towards improving their club facilities and as such creating a local hub to increase opportunity and participation in cricket. Shepperton Cricket Club

The initial stage of this was to merge the men’s and ladies’ clubs, which up until last year have always been run as separate entities.

The following stage of this process was to knock down the existing pavilion and build a new and improved clubhouse and changing room facility, no easy task when considering the time-lines the club set themselves.

Chosen as a ‘Chance To Shine Project’ and as a part of Active Surrey's Club Coach Mentoring Scheme, Shepperton went about using their NatWest CricketForce status to progress their redevelopment plans.

The project, probably the largest to be undertaken through NatWest CricketForce, got underway very quickly. Starting on the 7 November, 60 club members turned out to support the official launch of the project with Dave Leighton.

Since that time, Shepperton have completed the planning permission and gained an ECBCT interest free loan. The development went through without a a problem, thanks to the help of Robert Davies John West Architects from Staines, who completed the planning application saving in total £6000.

Cannon & Company were the next in line with help, taking on the project management FOC, which helped to save Shepperton in the region of £17000.

With the loan confirmed on the 8 February, the demolition process was given the go ahead only two days later. This was all in preparation for the big event on Saturday 17 February, where Surrey’s Dernbach helped to tear down the old clubhouse structure.

Commenting on the demolition process Dernbach said: “It was a fantastic day. The amount of effort that the club members have put in to get this far is just inspirational. Everyone seems very determined to complete the project on time and from what I can see, they will do exactly that.”
With the demolition stage of the project over, the foundations of the new structure have already started to be put in place with the shell of the building hoping to be completed on the 19 March, Shepperton are expecting to have their new pavilion ready at the end of the month.

They are now focussing on arranging the services of tradesmen (plumbers, electricians, joiners, tillers, kitchen fitters, and painters), with the materials donated from local businesses, so that completion date can be met.

The club have schedualed a fund raising dinner on 3 March at Shepperton Studios, where they will be having an auction and raffle, in the hope of raising £5000 to go alongside the £2500 already donated by the club members.
