Crunch time for Surrey in Friends Provident Trophy

Published 12 June 2007

Mark Butcher

Mark Butcher and James Benning will undergo fitness tests this afternoon to determine their availability for Surrey’s crunch Friends Provident Trophy match against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl tomorrow.

Currently fifth in the South Division of the Friends Provident Trophy, Surrey must win their match, but will also be dependent upon Essex losing in order to guarantee qualification into the semi finals.

Both Butcher and Benning missed Sunday’s match against Somerset through injury and as such will undergo testing this afternoon to determine whether they will be fit to play tomorrow. As a result Alan Butcher has selected a large squad to cover all bases in the event that neither player can play.

The last time Surrey and Hampshire met in the domestic One Day competition was at Whitgift last year when Shane Warne ran through Surrey’s batting to pick up six wickets. The Brown Caps will be hoping that Chris Schofield will have a similar influence on tomorrow’s match by reproducing the sort of form that has seen him pick up 12 wickets in this year’s competition.
Injury news:

Mark Butcher injured his achilles whilst in the field against Worcestershire.

James Benning strained his side at the beginning of last week. Surrey’s medical staff are confident that he should be available for tomorrow’s match.

Jimmy Ormond has begun the next stage of the rehabilitation process after injuring his hamstring in the second team’s fixture against Somerset last month. He has been bowling in the nets this morning and will continue to bowl this week.

The Surrey squad for tomorrow’s match is as follows:

James Benning
Scott Newman
Ali Brown
Mark Ramprakash
Mark Butcher
Jonathan Batty
Rikki Clarke
Rory Hamilton-Brown
Stewart Walters
Chris Schofield
Azhar Mahmood
Matthew Nicholson
Nayan Doshi
Jade Dernbach
