Azhar Joins the World Cup
Published 1 March 2007
Surrey’s overseas player Azhar Mahmood has received his second International call up in as many month’s, having been selected as a replacement for the injured Abdul Razzaq in Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.
As a result of a knee injury sustained during a recent practice session, Razzaq has been advised that he may be out of the game for up to three weeks, which impacts the start of his country’s campaign for the World Cup, which begins on March 14.
This is an exciting opportunity for Azhar, however, who made his first appearance in 12 months for Pakistan last month against South Africa. Although he had limited opportunities during his brief stint in South Africa, Azhar made the most of one with a powerful all round performance with bat and ball during the third ODI in Port Elizabeth.
Whilst the Surrey squad will miss Azhar as they officially begin their pre-season training today, we all wish him well in his Caribbean adventure.
