Biography
Usman Afzaal has now been a part of the County Circuit for more than a decade, having had stints with Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire. In October of 2007, he put pen to paper with Surrey, which will keep him at the Brit Oval for the next three seasons. The 30 year old has scored over 11,000 first-class runs and is a strong middle-order batsman who traditionally likes to drive the ball down the ground but is equally as impressive off his pads. In 2001, he made his Test debut for England against a formidable Australian attack which included the likes of Warne and McGrath but after a half century in the final Test at the Brit Oval, he was never selected to play again. The move to Surrey will bring hope that he can rejuvenate his England career once more.
Player facts
Most memorable individual performance playing for Surrey?:
Well that’s yet to come but hopefully it will be when I make my maiden hundred for Surrey at the Brit Oval.
Favourite food:
My Mum and Auntie Joyce's cooking. Everything they cook is phenomenal.
Favourite TV programme:
Only fools and Horses
Most favoured holiday destination:
I love Prague.
Most embarrassing moment:
When I played against the Australians in 2001 for Nottinghamshire. I was bowling to Michael Bevan and I had him in a bit of trouble. Needless to say, I was sledging him a bit and then all of sudden, out of no where, he hits me for one of the biggest sixes you’ll ever see. It went out of the ground and then my team erupted into fits of laughter. I too had to see the funny side!!
What was the first CD or record you purchased?:
Had to be Michael Jackson
If you could be a professional sportsman in something other than cricket, what sport would you choose and why?:
I would love to be a professional footballer for Manchester United. I’m not the greatest footballer around but watching big matches on TV, you can’t help but get carried away by their skill. The atmosphere at major matches is amazing and that’s something I’d love to be a part of.
Most admired Surrey player of all time:
Mark Ramprakash and Mark Butcher
If you were down to your last £10, how would you spend it?:
I’d go to the Mosque and give it to a charity there which would be a blessing and a good deed done.
