With rain spoiling day two, Walters explains how cricketers pass the time

Once again the rain was the winner at the Brit Oval as the second day’s play of Surrey’s LV County Championship match against Sussex was completely washed out without a ball bowled. However www.surreycricket.com are not letting you go away empty handed as Stewart Walters spoke exclusively to Surrey TV about what a cricketer gets up to when the rain is falling.
“There’s not a lot to do. Downstairs is the indoor cricket school…so I’ve had a few throw downs with Al (Surrey Cricket Manager, Alan Butcher) and Ramps” explains Walters.
This summer has been one of the worst in history in terms of cricket being lost to the weather. In fact Surrey Cricket Scorer, Keith Booth, suggested that one would have to look as far back as 1956 to find a summer where as much cricket has been lost to bad weather.
It is of course frustrating for the spectators, particularly on a day like today, where there have been long spells with no rain but the fact of the matter is that the damage has already been done, with the pitch being too wet and dangerous to play on.
This sort of situation makes it difficult for the players as well. Particularly in such an important match, where both teams want and need to play.
“It’s one of those things. You have to be mentally tough upstairs and be prepared for anything that comes, comments Walters. When there’s a day lost through the rain…it becomes a bit more difficult, but Sussex will look to extend their lead and set us a target or vica versa.”
Walters played a couple of games in the first team at the end of last season but had to wait until July to get his chance for first class cricket this time around. He had a great run with the second team and then took his chance against Durham at the Brit Oval with an innings that was recognised by Cricket Manager, Butcher, as a candidate for the Marstons’ Moments of July. However since then, it has been a bit more difficult for the attacking batsman.
“It’s been tough but that’s one of those things you are going to get coming into first class cricket. I’ve had a couple of low scores and I’ve had a couple of decent scores. There are a few games to go and hopefully I can get a couple of decent scores to finish the season, just to say that I have had a pretty good year.”
