Weather frustrates Surrey

Headingley Raining

Rain and bad light allowed only 12 balls to be bowled on day two at Headingley. Surrey were left frustrated as they were unable to build on their solid position in the match

When the players arrived at Headingley for day two they were greeted with persistent rain. The weather forecasts were predicting rain all day and no play looked likely. However, the rain eased and although some light drizzle was in the air, the ground staff worked constantly to mop up the water on the covers. An early lunch was taken at 1pm and was followed by news from umpires Barry Leadbetter and Nigel Llong that play would begin at 2:15pm. When play did begin only two overs were bowled, Yorkshire adding nine to their total, as bad light and rain brought the players off the field. During this period it was clear that the ball became wet immediately, which meant Harbhajan Singh and the other Surrey bowlers were unable to grip the ball sufficiently.

By around 4pm the rain had passed and the ground staff tried to dry the outfield as much as they could, but it was to no avail. The umpires had a long debate with both captains and eventually called play off at 5:30pm.
