Stewart Walters bounced back from a low score in his first Club match in the Western Australian Premiership, with a bumper weekend that yielded 151 unbeaten runs in two innings for his new side Perth.

Taking on Fremantle away from home, Walters did the right thing on Saturday morning, to win the toss and insert the home team. His opening bowlers got Perth off to a great start, by picking up early wickets to leave Fremantle struggling on 35 for six.

Although the home team did put a few partnerships together with their remaining four wickets, Walters and his Surrey team mate, James Benning, chipped in with some economical bowling to ensure that Fremantle did not get away. Benning’s 14 overs cost him just 40 runs, whilst Walters, with six overs, went for just 18 runs. However, it was left to opening bowler Daniel Townend to finish things off with four wickets to bowl the opposition out for 166.

In reply, Benning, opening the batting, got Perth off to another fiery start. He blasted his way to 20 from only 29 deliveries before falling caught behind for the second week running. Another couple of wickets fell but Walters came to the crease in confident fashion to steady the ship for his side. He put together a magnificent 179 run partnership for the fifth wicket to take Perth past the winning total and gain some extra batting points before finishing 91 not out at the close.

The following day, Perth travelled to Sutherlands Park to take on Gosnells in a One Day Premiership match. Losing the toss, Perth batted first and found themselves in a similar situation to that of yesterday. Nonetheless, the situation ended much the same as Walters and Paul Nicholas put on another great partnership of 148. The latter fell with only a few deliveries remaining but Walters continued on to guide his team to 221 from their 50 overs, finishing 60 not out.

In reply, Perth squeezed the Gosnells’ batting by picking up regular wickets. Walters took his good form with the bat into the field, to pick up two for 18 with the ball and supporting this effort with a run out and a good catch. The Gosnells never recovered from their poor start and eventually capitulated to a 55 run defeat, giving Perth their second win of the weekend.

Meanwhile in the KFC Cup in the Caribbean, Pedro Collins continued his good form with the ball, to pick up another very economical wicket as Barbados charged through the Leeward Islands to their second victory. Batting first Barbados scored 230 before being bowled out short of their 50 overs.

Collins bowled an economical opening spell with the ball, to support the devastating pace of Fidel Edwards who snapped up five wickets. Collins then returned to finish off proceedings for Barbados, picking up one for 43 from ten as Barbados won by 14 runs.
