Walters and Benning lead title charge in WA
Published 14 January 2008
Surrey stars Stewart Walters and James Benning have helped their Australian side, Perth Cricket Club, into a fantastic position in the Western Australian Premier League.
Walters, who moved from Midland Guildford to Perth to take on the role of player/coach and captain, will be delighted with the progress his side has made. Perth have extended their lead at the top of the table to 15 points having won ten out of the 11 matches they have played, and now seem certain to qualify for the play-offs at the end of the season.
Four wickets from Benning, who opened the bowling in Perth’s last match, helped his side to victory against Waneroo. However it was the 161 runs yielded from the last two Perth wickets in their first innings that allowed the home team to post the formidable total of 322. This was thanks to Paul Keenan, with 85, and Daniel Townend (50), who both plundered a Waneroo attack that felt the job was done when the league leaders floundered on 161 for eight.
Over the other side of Australia, Matthew Nicholson has continued to put in consistent performances for New South Wales. Now in the middle of the domestic Twenty20 season, New South Wales find themselves mid-table on four points. Nicholson has played his part for his side, but unfortunately his all round performance against Victoria was not quite enough to take the Blues to victory. His picked up one for 37 and scored 20 not out but ran out of partners as New South Wales lost by 12 runs.
The Brown Caps’ quick bowler, Stuart Meaker, who signed for the Club in October last year, is preparing to take on Sri Lanka and Pakistan under 19s in an International triangular One Day series in Sri Lanka, before England embark on the under 19 World Cup. He will be keeping www.surreycricket.com readers up to date with all that goes on by writing a regular blog from inside the England camp.
Matthew Spriegel, who is travelling to India with team mate Chris Murtagh and Surrey Assistant Coach, Nadeem Shahid, will also be keeping www.surreycricket.com readers up to date with a blog. Spriegel is studying at Loughborough University, but has taken the time to travel to the sub-continent and will with Murtagh seek the guidance of Shahid to work on his technique in preparation for the coming season.
