Stuart Meaker

The Pemberton Greenish Surrey Academy has continued its production of first class cricketers, with the announcement that Surrey and England under 19, Stuart Meaker, is to join Surrey’s senior playing staff for 2008.

An 18 year-old fast bowler, Meaker’s hard work with the Pemberton Greenish Surrey Academy last winter earned him a place on Surrey’s pre-season tour to Mumbai back in March this year. Continued success with the Academy and Surrey second team throughout the summer gained him under 19 International recognition, where he played two Test Match and three One Day Internationals against the Pakistan under 19s.

The Pemberton Greenish Surrey Academy Director, Gareth Townsend, spoke to Surrey TV about the summer and the plans for the winter ahead. Click here to see this interview.

Meaker has also been selected as a member of the England squad that will travel to Malaysia to take part in the ICC under 19 World Cup in February and March next year.

Continuing in this vein, Surrey have also offered contracts to another two young hopefuls: Chris Murtagh and Gary Wilson. Murtagh has been part of the Surrey staff for the last three years as a summer contracted player whilst at Loughborough University. His prolific form for the second team this season, which saw him score 503 runs at an average of 71.85, has been rewarded with a full contract for 2008.

Wilson, a wicket keeper batsman, signed a one-year contract with Surrey at the end of 2006. His strong all round performance throughout 2007, including 27 catches and six stumpings in the second XI Championship, has earned him a new two-year contract, keeping him at the Brit Oval until the end of 2009.

Surrey cricket manager, Alan Butcher, commented: "Gary has had an excellent start to his career at Surrey. He is a positive addition to any dressing room and a further two years is just reward for the hard work he has put in.”

He added: “Hard work has also been a by-word for Chris and Stuart who have both made excellent progress this year. Chris has been prolific in the second XI for the last three seasons while Stuart has forced his way into England's U19 World Cup squad. They both fully deserve these opportunities."
