Surrey secure the future of young talent Jordan

After a fantastic start to his first class career, Surrey County Cricket Club have confirmed Chris Jordan’s presence on the full-time professional staff with a two year contract that will keep him at the Brit Oval until the end of 2009.
The 18-year-old signed a two-year summer contract with Surrey at the end of the 2006 season, but after such an impressive start to his first class career in England, Surrey have upgraded his contract, making him a full-time member of the professional staff.
Jordan arrived on the county scene with a bang, making his first team debut in Surrey’s first NatWest Pro40 match against Middlesex at Lord’s. After finishing the match with figures of one for 43 from eight overs and picking up the wicket of Owais Shah, the quick bowling all rounder became a permanent fixture in the Surrey team for the remainder of the season. It was in the LV County Championship that he really shone however, as his five opportunities yielded 20 wickets at just 24.50.
Surrey have also retained the services of their opening batsman, Scott Newman, with a three year contract. The left-hander had a brilliant all round season with the bat, particularly in the One Day format. He supported his 812 LV County Championship runs with 378 in the NatWest Pro40 at an average of 54. The highlight of the season was undoubtedly his match winning innings of 94 not out against the Kent Spitfires at Canterbury in the NatWest Pro40. He carried his bat through Surrey’s innings to eventually take his side to victory off the last ball of the innings.
Surrey Cricket Manager, Alan Butcher, commented: "It is great news that Chris and Scott have committed themselves to Surrey. Chris announced himself this season as a major talent although only 18 and fresh out of school while Scott learned a lot about himself and the game in general this season which will stand him in good stead for future years. The best is yet to come from both players.”
