Surrey crash to 346 run defeat

Yorkshire celebrate

Yorkshire made light work of Surrey when they raced to a comprehensive 346 run win at the Brit Oval today.

Starting the day needing nine wickets on what was still an excellent batting track, the Yorkshire men, lead by Darren Gough and Matthew Hoggard, sliced through the Surrey batting order to have the home side all out for just 170 runs shortly after the lunch break.

After losing Jonathan Batty off the last ball of the day yesterday, things went from bad to worse for Surrey when danger man, Mark Ramprakash was trapped lbw by Gough for just five and then stand in captain Rikki Clarke Darren Gough

went shortly after when he was bowled by a superb delivery, again from Gough for just three.

England paceman, Hoggard then ripped through the Surrey middle order to finish with the figures of 4-34 from 12 overs.

Scott Newman was the only shining light today who made a polished 89 to sit nicely with his majestic century that he made in the first innings. Newman’s departure, caught behind off the bowling of Hoggard with the score at 133 for seven all but ended Surrey’s optimistic hopes of saving the game.

Despite the convincing win by the visitors Surrey can take some positives out of this match. Shortly after lunch on day one, Yorkshire were floundering at 127-5 due to some excellent bowling by the home side. In addition, it was encouraging to see that Ramprakash seemed to pick up from where he left off last season with another hundred to his name, his 88th in first class-cricket. The exciting batting of Newman where he scored 124 and 89 must also be encouraging for Cricket Manager, Alan Butcher.
