Surrey and Ireland share points in rain abandoned match

Published 27 May 2007

Rain at the Brit Oval

Surrey’s Friend’s Provident match with Ireland was unsurprisingly called off at around 2.45pm today due to excessive amounts of rain.

The forecast, which had predicted rain all day in the London area, was close to 100% correct, with next to no breaks in the drizzle from early this morning.

An early lunch was taken when conditions brightened up and the rain had subsided but the ground was extremely wet under foot with puddles all around the outfield. The decision to call off proceedings was finally taken when the rain started to come down again at about 2.15pm and when it did not look like easing up, the umpires decided that enough was enough.

The Brown Caps will now travel to Cresselly for another one-day match against Glamorgan. The shared points today, takes Surrey into second position on the ladder, behind Kent, who’s match against Somerset was also abandoned. However the Spitfires, who are just one point clear of Surrey, have played one extra game, so the top spot is up for grabs tomorrow.

Surrey will be without one of their stars, Azhar Mahmood who was hit on the elbow during a practice session on Saturday. This is just a precautionary measure and the all-rounder is expected to be fit again for the all-important LV County Championship match with Kent at Whitgift School beginning on Wednesday. Scott Newman and Stewart Walters have been added to the squad for tomorrow.
