Schofield in T20 World Cup squad

Surrey’s leg spinning all rounder, Chris Schofield has been selected as part of England’s 15-man squad for the ICC Twenty20 World Cup taking place in South Africa next month.

Schofield has been rewarded for his fantastic form in the One Day arena for Surrey this season. His consistency with the ball in the Friends Provident Trophy, was exemplified by the Brown Caps' captain, Mark Butcher having the confidence to bowl him in the latter stages of the innings. The 13 wickets he took in the Trophy, which include best figures of four for 32 against Sussex, was well supported by his electric ability in the field and his more than useful batting.

The Twenty20 Cup brought much of the same for Schofield, as his control with the ball slowed the opposition’s scoring in the middle sector of the short innings on more than one occasion. This control was a key factor in him being the the leading wicket taker after the Divisional matches, with his 17 wickets supported by an economy of only six runs per over.

His form in One Day cricket for Surrey this season has seen him hold down a regular place in the LV County Championship side, pairing up with the Indian spinning great Harbhajan Singh.

Commenting on his selection in the England Twenty20 squad, Schofield said: “When I got the call from David Graveney, I was thrilled. He told me that no one had taken as many wickets as I have in the competition at such a low economy rate.”

He added: “He also said to me that they have the utmost confidence in me to do the job in South Africa, and I am just thrilled that they think this way. I am really looking forward to the tournament, I have worked really hard on my cricket over the past few years and it is great to see that it is paying off now.”

Upon hearing the news, Schofield spoke exclusively to Surrey TV, if you would like to see this interview, click here.
