Ramprakash picked in PCA dream team
Published 26 September 2007
Surrey’s star batsman, Mark Ramprakash, has been selected as part of the Professional Cricketers’ Association’s dream team, which selected the leading eleven county cricketers upon the basis of the PCA Player Rankings scheme.
Ramprakash came fourth in the most valuable player rankings but not surprisingly gained the top spot as the leading batsman in the country. The accolade of the most valuable player of the season – bestowed for the first time ever this year – went to Durham’s all rounder Otis Gibson, who was also named as the NatWest PCA Player of the year at the awards ceremony last Monday.
The PCA Player Rankings are based on a formula developed with input from past and present players. By comparing player performances in all four domestic competitions, they are significantly more meaningful than anything that has gone before. The rankings are a cumulative points system that rewards every run scored, wicket taken and catch held. Unlike any other statistical tool, it also gives credit for captaincy and to winning teams.
Ramprakash had another remarkable season with the bat. By mirroring last year’s achievements, the Surrey number three became the first player in the history of first class cricket in England to average over 100. His incredible form throughout this season saw him go past 2000 runs and in doing so, surpass 30,000 career first class runs. He also scored ten LV County Championship centuries, taking him to just three away from the magical 100 first class centuries.
The Hewitt Team of the Year is as follows
Rob Key (c)
Darren Maddy
Mark Ramprakash
David Sales
Graeme Hick
Phil Mustard (wk)
Graeme Swann
Ottis Gibson
Kabir Ali
Mushtaq Ahmed
Andy Caddick
Surrey were also well represented by Jonathan Batty, who beat Durham’s wicket keeper, Phil Mustard to the most valuable fielder award. In conjunction with his 47 dismissals (42 catches and five stumpings) the Surrey wicket keeper scored 965 runs including four centuries at an average of 43.86.
